Luz Escalante Project Runway Moda Winner
In Mexico is it difficult to find a job as a designer if you don’t have your own business and even less if the country is not doing well due to a big recession. I worked for a year in a Wedding design house, designing wedding dresses, but unfortunately the house had to close due to the bad economy in Mexico. After that I moved to Tucson to study English and to wait for the economic situation to change in Mexico. I took some English classes in El Rio Community Center then I transfer to Pima Community College to take some classes for Fashion design, marketing and English classes. I think education is one of the most important factors in life and I would like to improve my English and get a degree in marketing or fashion design here in the United States. In the future I would like to have a wedding and gala dresses business. I know that I am limiting my market when I decide just to design a special dress for a special occasion. When I design I think about who is going to wear the dress, the occasion for wearing the dress, preferences, trends and what she wants to reflect. I know women are naturally romantic but some have their romanticism very hidden and they don’t want to show that, but I can design special wedding dresses for that people. Wedding dresses don’t necessary has to be white and use laces and laths. I can use different colors, fabrics, textures like denim, leather and paper; everything depending on the preferences and what woman want and need. As a designer I get inspired in everything I see, but I also keep in mind the life style and needs of women I design for. I haven’t had the opportunity to work as a designer here in Tucson. I currently work as a care giver and this job is connecting me with my soul. I feel satisfied helping people who need my help, but if I can help more designing that’s something that I would want to do, helping those who really need it. This is one of my reasons for participating in this event. The other reason is my best friend who inspired me to continue my education here in the United States. He came from Mexico as well and we meat studying English. His infancy was very difficult he was mentally strong and wanted to do something important with his life. He studied in Mexico and worked there as well but he moved to the United States when he got HIV because he would have more opportunities to help him here. He was an activist in Mexico and here in the United States as well, helping and working for others who have the same problem. He would talk about HIV, AIDS and the discrimination towards those who have this sickness especially in Mexico. He was a great example of courage and of someone who was strong willed that always wanted to keep moving forward. My friend was my reason to participate on this event, because I wanted to help the Arizona AIDS Foundation and I would like to thank you for all the support given to my friend, Thank you again. |
