Rima Dolgoff

On Rima:

Rima was a magical jungle girl who enchanted wild beasts with a gentle bird song.  I was named after this creature from the book, “Green Mansions”, and thus, use a leaf motif for my clothing label, and for my online store.  But actually I've mostly been a city-dweller – I’m originally from the Bay Area, and then lived in NYC for many years.  I moved to Tucson to finish up my PhD in neuropsychology a couple years back, and ended up staying.  Throughout my PhD, I designed and sewed as a means of keeping myself sane.  I currently maintain a good balance of psychology, design and motherhood.  I live with my partner, Derek, and one-year-old son, Roen.

On Rima’s Creative Process:

I’ve been intrigued by magic since I was little, and I think that’s what attracted me to both brain-science and design work.  It is hard to say where ideas come from, but I know that for me, fantasy has a big role.  I do most of my designing with my eyes closed, often just before I fall asleep at night, or right when I awaken in the morning.  After I have a new concept, the scientist in me labors over every detail until I feel it’s right.  I try to make things that are a bit otherworldly, but still practical and stylish.  I also love versatility in a design, so that people can play with a piece and make it their own.  It’s also more fun that way.
